Demanding Fair Fares on NJ Transit

NJ Transit is New Jersey’s public transportation corporation and provides bus, rail, and light rail services that link locations in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia. It is the nation’s third largest provider of mass transit and directly serves 900,000 to 1.1 million users each day.

On March 5, 2010, NJ Transit’s executive director announced that it plans to increase fares by 25 percent and eliminate off-peak discounts. These changes are scheduled to go into effect this May.

This website is intended to serve as a resource for action among residents to let officials know that these proposed changes are not just “painful,” but unbearable.

Increasing fares is bad public policy that creates severe hardship for millions of people in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Fare hikes will raise already high costs of living for thousands of transit riders and discourage people from using mass transit altogether. Fare hikes are likely to congest our roads, pollute our environment, and make New Jersey a considerably less desirable place to live and work.
